Green and Sustainable Software Engineering

We are thrilled to announce the Green and Sustainable Software Engineering (SE) Summer School 2025, a one-week intensive learning and collaboration opportunity at the University of Lagos, Nigeria.

As the world pushes toward digital transformation, the environmental and societal impact of software systems cannot be ignored. By 2040, ICT driven by software systems could contribute up to 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This is a wake-up call for action.

This summer school is grounded in the values of the EU Green Deal and the AU Agenda 2063, supporting SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 4 (Quality Education). It brings together international experts, educators, students, and industry professionals to empower the next generation of software engineers with green skills and tools to tackle sustainability challenges head-on.

This initiative is powered by the Software Engineers for Green Deal (SE4GD) Hub UNILAG and SE4GD Consortium Europe with partners across Nigeria.

Prof. Jari Porras

LUT University, Finland

Professor of Software Engineering at LUT University and Visiting Professor at Aalto University (Finland) and University of Huddersfield (UK), Prof. Porras leads research on sustainable ICT and software engineering. He coordinates the Erasmus Mundus Master's Programme Software Engineers for Green Deal (SE4GD) and was named Finland's IT Influencer of the Year 2023 for his pioneering work on sustainability in tech.

Dr. Birgit Penzenstadler

University of Gothenburg, Sweden

Associate Professor at Chalmers | University of Gothenburg and Adjunct Professor at LUT, Dr. Penzenstadler explores sustainability, resilience, and well-being in software engineering. She is a founding member of the Karlskrona Alliance and co-author of the Karlskrona Manifesto. Her interdisciplinary work bridges technology, mindfulness, and permaculture, as highlighted in her 2022 TEDx talk.

Dr. Colin C. Venter

University of Limerick, Ireland

Associate Professor at the University of Limerick and Research Software Engineer (RSE) at CERN associated with the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) experiment; the largest general-purpose particle detector experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Dr. Venter research interest focuses on sustainable software engineering from a software architecture perspective for pre-system and post-system maintenance and evolution.

Prof. Steffi Betz

Hochschule Furtwangen University, Germany

Full Professor at Hochschule Furtwangen University and Adjunct Professor at LUT, Prof. Betz researches sustainability in software systems, focusing on modelling and analyzing socio-technical impacts. She is part of the Karlskrona Alliance and contributes to advancing tools and methods that help engineers address sustainability concerns in system design.

Dr. Shola Oyedeji

LUT University, Finland

Postdoctoral researcher at LUT University, Dr. Oyedeji’s research work centers on integrating sustainability dimensions (human, societal, environmental, technical, and economic) into software design. As a member of the Sustainability Alliance, he promotes sustainable practices among software professionals and leads educational and research collaborations between Europe and Africa.
